Aspiring land professionals and land investors learn the basics of land brokerage in this introduction to the land specialty.
This hybrid course involves NO travel. Students are sent an electronic copy of the manual and a suggested syllabus to follow, and have a month during which to complete the independent study. Independent study is combined with instructor-led phone lectures/discussions to ensure top-notch learning. The examination is completed remotely at the end of the course.

About the Facilitator
Sam Kain, ALC, teaches classes as an instructor for RLI. He is a past National president of the REALTORS Land Institute and former chapter president of the Iowa Farm and Land Chapter #2. Kain works for Farmers National Company as a sales manager, recruiting and training the sales staff and also monitoring and managing all real estate activity of Farmers National Company’s agents in Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, South Dakota and North Dakota. In 2001 he was honored by the Iowa chapter as the Farm and Land Broker of the Year and in 2009 he was named Land REALTOR of the Year at the RLI Annual Conference.

This course combines independent study that is done anytime/any place with the opportunity to interact with the instructor during four two-hour phone learning conferences. These learning sessions will be facilitated by Andre van Rensburg, ALC.
Course Summary
Land for investment is big business. In this course, students learn to determine relevant cash flows for origination (purchase/acquisition), operation (rents, income and partial sales), and liquidation (sale/disposition). Other topics covered are: time value of money techniques to analyze cash flows, traditional indicators (ratios, cap rates, cash-on-cash) for investment analysis, and alternative investment analysis as a way to select the most appropriate two acquisition techniques. Students are given spreadsheet templates for analyzing case studies. This course counts as a requirement toward earning the Accredited Land Consultant (ALC) designation.

*This course involves extensive math. This hybrid delivery is a sound alternative for those who have some background in Investment Analysis and have strong math skills.

Facilitator Conferences: Students have the option to attend four phone conferences composed of lectures, discussions, hands-on directions and use of calculator and computer spreadsheet tools, and a question and answer session with the course facilitator. The RLI Director of Education will supply the conference call access information. The dates and times of the calls will be posted by November 1, 2010. Course Exam: The course exam will be available at the end of week four via an online link.
- At the end of week four, the RLI Director of Education will give exam access information to the registered students.
- Students will have 90 minutes in which to complete the exam
- Students who successfully complete the exam will receive an RLI certificate of successful completion listing 20 contact hours. Note: RLI does not issue continuing education units. Questions regarding CE credits should be directed to the organization issuing the credits i.e. a local or state board

About the Facilitator
Andre van Rensburg, ALC, is president of Prudential Network Realty in Jacksonville, Florida. Van Rensburg specializes in commercial real estate throughout the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Africa. He teaches land and commercial real estate practices and has been a court-appointed appraiser in South Africa. Van Rensburg is an approved instructor for RLI and CCIM, and is a past member of the RLI Education Task Force. He also was awarded the 2009 RLI Excellence in Education Award for his outstanding instructional skills and organization contributions.

WHAT IS A HYBRID COURSE? An RLI hybrid course is a blend of independent study with phone instruction.
WHAT IS THE BREAKDOWN BETWEEN THE INDEPENDENT STUDY TIME AND THE INSTRUCTOR PHONE GUIDANCE? The course takes place within a four-week period. Suggested timeframes for completion of chapters is given to the students.
Two conference calls with the instructor will be facilitated. One call will take place during week two; the other call will take place during week four. Each call will last 2.5 hours. Attendance at these calls is optional.
HOW DO I RECEIVE THE MATERIALS? RLI will supply a copy of the course manual to all registrants. This will either be in an electronic format or in a hard copy sent via the U.S. mail.
HOW WILL I GAIN ACCESS TO THE COURSE EXAMINATION? The students will be given access to the electronic examination on a specific day and for a 90-minute time period. The completed examination will be submitted to the RLI Education Manager. Specific instructions will be provided.
DOES THIS COURSE COUNT TOWARD THE ALC DESIGNATION? Yes, this fulfills one of the course requirements for the designation.
DOES THIS COURSE COUNT TOWARD CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT? The student would need to check with the accrediting organization to see if the course fulfills a CE requirement.
WILL A CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION BE SENT? Students who successfully complete the course and pass the examination will receive a certificate of completion noting sixteen contact hours.
