As you are about to cast your vote for the next RLI Vice President, as one of your candidates, I thought you might want to know a little more about me.  I have been involved with real estate transactions as a real estate licensed sales agent and later a real estate broker for over 42 years. I have observed and worked with some excellent real estate brokers and real estate sales agents, but unfortunately, I have also observed some and worked with some who did not aspire to the professional standards and professional practices provided and promoted by RLI.

Belonging to a professional organization such as RLI, at chapter and national levels, provides valuable networking contacts and is extremely beneficial by the educational offerings that raise the professional standards for our members, and most importantly, benefit our clients in the best way possible.  I am proud of my RLI membership and the RLI designation bestowed upon me several years ago.  I feel my clients understand that the professionalism brought to them is best serving their interests.

My platform emphasizes the need to work closer with our chapters who are always the grass roots of any national organization. The RLI National organization, through its leadership, needs to strengthen our outreach program to assist the chapters with membership retention and growth, educational offerings, as well as upward feedback as to how RLI can be of greater value to the members. We need to continuously review our courses to make sure they are cutting edge and provide our members with the tools to be better at serving the client's needs. We will need to create new classes as our businesses and clients needs evolve in this rapidly moving world we live in.

Let's increase our efforts to recruit new members and help them be as informed as they can regarding real estate transactions. I would much rather have fully capable, trained and professional competitors than the opposite.  Folks are real busy these days and usually do not have a lot of spare time to do much else other than work, spend some time with the family and hopefully enjoy life.  We need to constantly work on ways to facilitate networking opportunities, education and other member services to encourage member participation and obviously add value to their business.

Many of you may think this guy must have a huge ego after just finishing up as the President of the American Society of Farm Managers & Rural Appraisers. I can assure you that is not the case. Frankly, I thought long and hard about throwing my hat in the ring as one of your Vice Presidential candidates. I called Past Presidents of RLI, studied the current strategic plan, mission and vision to make sure I can make a viable contribution if elected. I asked the Past Presidents what needs to be done and am I the person to be a part of the future leadership team. The answers were such that if elected, I will commit the time, energy and visionary leadership to RLI.

I am a very motivated person who enjoys working with people and the many challenges we face each day. I am a believer in working as a team, with the results, bad or good, shared amongst the team. Perhaps some of this comes from serving in the United States Army Active and Reserve Components, retiring from such after 35 years as a CW 5.

My wife Patty and I live in Naperville, Illinois, about 50 miles west of Chicago. I have two adult children and very recently my daughter and son-in-law blessed us with our second grandson.  We are members of Grace United Methodist Church and have been very active in church activities. My hobbies are bird hunting, sporting clay shooting, target shooting, running and hiking, and a real favorite is restoration of classic Mustang cars, of which I have three.

I know that whoever is elected will do an outstanding job for RLI. Thank you very much for your consideration.

I am running for 2009 Vice President of RLI because I want to give back to the association that gave me a quality education, a national referral network, and a group of friends and associates that have enriched and inspired my professional and personal life in many ways.  I will be an effective team member, and when president, I will make sober, rational decisions for the good of the membership.

RLI is a business, and I am a businessman. Being successful in several businesses in my career, including real estate brokerage, I have gained experience in budgeting, promotion, managing people, and developing organization plans.  I have held a Mississippi real estate license since 1990 and co-founded Nancy Lane Commercial Realty, Inc., a full service commercial brokerage, in 2001.

I have been active in RLI since joining, serving as the 2003 RLI Mississippi Chapter President, serving as an RLI representative on various NAR committees, attending both NAR annual meetings, and I am the current Legislative Coordinator on the RLI Board of Directors.

Being on RLI’s board this year with monthly conference call meetings and reviewing and modifying the Strategic Plan at the Mid-Year convention has impressed on me the importance of a cohesive leadership plan that transcends the presidency each year to achieve long-term goals and guide the association’s future success. I am committed to stay the course with this blueprint.

My future vision is for RLI to be a member-directed association that is recognized as the premier land REALTOR organization, that provides quality education, that benefits from alliance partners, and that provides political advocacy to ensure that our businesses survive and grow.

The key to RLI’s membership growth is achieving these goals in a realistic and proportional manner. Membership growth is directly proportional to the total benefits afforded the members and vice versa. This equation must be continually monitored in order to succeed.

An important part of my vision is promotion of the ALC brand for increased transactional opportunities. The annual Land Conference should grow to become the largest land professional meeting in North America, bringing together not only members of RLI, but timber professionals, farm managers, appraisers, surveyors, and related service and product providers. This will enlarge our sponsorship and alliance partner opportunities.

I look forward to serving the members of the REALTORS® Land Institute.
