Position of 2007 Vice President has been
filled
RLI
had an excellent election this year and I'd like to thank members who
exercised an important duty of membership by voting. Three very qualified
candidates stepped up to the plate to offer their expertise and leadership
services if elected to the position of Vice President. Only one member could
win, and the votes have been tabulated. The RLI Officers and Board of
Directors would like to congratulate and welcome Keith Morris, ALC (TN) to
the leadership team.
If you've not met Keith, you will have the
opportunity to do so during the annual convention in New Orleans. Hope to
see you there.
Congratulations, Keith!

Department of Interior to Hold National
Listening Sessions on Cooperative Conservation
The Departments of the Interior,
Commerce and Agriculture, as well as the Environmental Protection Agency and
Council on Environmental Quality, announced last month their intent to hold
a series of listening sessions throughout the United States on cooperative
conservation that are intended to cover, among other matters, ways to
improve the ESA. The Administration considers these sessions to be a
critical element of ongoing efforts to develop widespread support for
administrative improvements to the ESA and is looking to NESARC and others
to help make the sessions a productive dialogue on how to improve the Act.
The first 8 session locations were released and announced to RLI members
earlier this week. Those sites are: Spokane, WA; Helena, MT; Roanoke, VA;
Columbus, OH; Redmond, OR; Jefferson City, MO; Enid, OK; and Redding, CA.
Please let us know if you plan to participate. STAFF CONTACT: Russell Riggs,
202-383-1259.
Click on the model testimony (below) created for members who are testifying
at the Cooperative Conservation Listening Sessions. We encourage those
members to embellish this statement with any success (or failure!) anecdotes
they are aware of in their community.

Tax Deferred 1031 Exchanges
available online!
Internal Revenue Code Section 1031 like-kind exchange is one
of the most useful tools for helping clients sell appreciated
business, farm and investment real estate. In this course,
students learn how one property can be sold and a replacement
property purchased without incurring any federal income taxes
on the sale. Federal tax rules are closely reviewed so
students can recognize exchange situations and learn how to
explain to clients the tax-saving benefits of the 1031
exchange. Also addressed are delayed exchanges and how the
installment sale of relinquished property may qualify in a
transaction to acquire replacement property. This
course is required to attain the
ALC designation.
