Site Selection HYBRID Course 


Date: June 3-28, 2013

Time:  Self-study, anytime with optional instructor led phone conferences 

Cost:  $445 members; $595 non-members; $345 ALCs 

Course Summary: Students will learn the principles of site analysis and how to recognize and project demographic growth trends and demand. Upon completion, students are able to utilize the knowledge and practical resources offered in this course to find the best sites for clients - and increase income. (16 contact hours)

Course Delivery Students will receive a self-study manual electronically and may print a hard copy if they wish. There will be two instructor-facilitated learning conference calls (attendance is optional but highly suggested).  The following are the dates and times of the calls for this session:

About the Facilitator: Andre J. Van Rensburg, ALC, is president of Prudential Commercial Real Estate in Jacksonville, FL. Van Rensburg specializes in commercial real estate throughout the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Africa. He teaches land and commercial real state practices and has been a court-appointed appraiser in South Africa. Van Rensburg is a former member of the RLI Education Task Force and was the Chair of the 2012 National Land Conference. He was awarded the 2009 and 2010 RLI Excellence in Education Awards for his outstanding instructional skills and contributions.

The Basics of Eminent Domain Law HYBRID

Date: June 3-17, 2013

Course Summary: This course is intended to provide participants with a thorough analysis of the historical development of eminent domain law in the United States. Substantive laws unique to particular states and jurisdictions are not detailed; however, the several types of statutory schemes will be reviewed to present an overview of the procedures involved in eminent domain. The sources of eminent domain law, from constitutional provisions to various federal and state statutes, will be presented as well as an analysis of the constitutional provisions regarding eminent domain. The elements of compensation and the legal aspects of eminent domain are included. The information provided is not legal advice and is not intended to supplant the advice of a licensed attorney in a state where affected property is in question. (8 contact hours)

About the Facilitator: Scott Doggett is an attorney representing public and private clients in real property litigation, with an emphasis on condemnation, inverse condemnation, mineral disputes and other land use conflicts. Doggett has over 22 years of litigation experience, which includes his work as an Assistant Attorney General for the Transportation Division condemning for TXDOT and state university lands, as well as defending landowners against cities, states, and railroads. Scott also serves as Special Counsel for the City of Rockwell, City of Denton, and City of Heath, Texas, condemning for roads, municipal utility easements and water storage facilities. For the balance of the past 6 years, Mr. Doggett has focused on condemning for gas utilities and electric transmission lines.

Course Summary: This short course explores advanced issues commonly encountered in 1031 exchanges relating to farms, ranches and recreational real estate. Although this course presumes knowledge of the basics of a 1031 exchange, there will be a review of basic concepts and structures to create a firm foundation for the advanced issues and applications. (8 contact hours)

About the Facilitator: James Miller, Esq. is Vice President and Regional manager at Investment Property Exchange Services, Inc. ("IPX1031"), a firm providing maximum assistance in structuring 1031 exchange transactions. Prior to joining IPX1031, Miller served as a mortgage banker in Arizona and a practicing real estate attorney in the State of New York. The States of Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas and Utah certify Mr. Miller to teach continuing education classes to their real estate licensees. Ethics in Real Estate ONLINE Course

Course Description: This course examines the ethical issues that confront real estate professionals as well as government and private sector professionals every day in the real estate arena. Students will foster a better awareness of the issues and apply them to their professional life. The course will focus on the legal and reputational standard of ethics. The course will consider the obligations, legally and morally, that individuals and groups from various constituencies- buyers, sellers, investors, lenders, regulators, law enforcers, reporters, elected and appointed officials - have to one another. (8 contact hours) 

About Online Classroom Delivery:  The virtual classroom allows for assignments to be posted, for asynchronous interaction with students and the professor, for questions to be posed, and for exams to be completed.  Students will have a month to complete this 24/7 on-demand course. 

The classroom is easy to negotiate and support will be available 24/7 to assist.
 
One can complete the course at his/her own rate on demand—anytime.  The interaction takes place when one enters the classroom and reads the discussions and responds to others.  The assignments are posted per week.  However, one does not have to wait to the week that an assignment is due to participate and complete the assignments.

About the Professor: Kurt Stanberry has been a professor in the College of Business at the University of Houston-Downtown since 1992. Stanberry is a licensed attorney with a civil practice that includes taxation, business, real estate and estate planning. He is an active speaker for events for CPAs, CFAs, and real estate brokers. He has authored textbooks and published articles in scholarly journals. Stanberry has a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Houston, an MBA from Temple University, and a BA from Yale University.

WHAT IS A HYBRID COURSE?        

An RLI hybrid course is a blend of independent study with phone instruction.              


HOW DO I RECEIVE THE MATERIALS?

RLI will supply an electronic copy of the course manual to all registrants via email. 


HOW WILL I GAIN ACCESS TO THE COURSE EXAMINATION?

The students will be given access to the electronic examination on a specific day and for a 90-minute time period. The completed examination will be submitted to the RLI Director of Education. Specific instructions will be provided. 


DO THE HYBRID/ONLINE COURSES COUNT TOWARD THE ALC DESIGNATION?

Yes, these courses fulfill the course requirements for the ALC designation.


DO THESE COURSES COUNT TOWARD CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT?

The student would need to check with the accrediting organization in his or her state to see if the course fulfills a CE requirement. 


WILL A CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION BE SENT?

Students who successfully complete the course and pass the examination will receive a certificate of completion noting sixteen contact hours.
