The REALTORS® Land Institute Announces 2021 National Leadership

September 16, 2020 (Chicago, Ill.) – The REALTORS® Land Institute (RLI), a commercial affiliate of the National Association of REALTORS®, proudly announces its 2021 national leadership. Luke Worrell, ALC, was elected by membership as their 2021 RLI National Vice President. Luke joins the 2021 RLI National Board of Directors as a member of the Executive Committee alongside 2021 President Renee Harvey, ALC, of Century 21 Harvey Properties in Texas; 2021 President-Elect Dean Saunders, ALC, of SVN Saunders Ralston Dantzler in Florida; and 2021 Immediate Past President Kyle Hansen, ALC, of Hertz Real Estate Services in Iowa.

As Vice President, Luke will serve a four-year term on RLI’s Executive Committee, making him the Institute’s 2023 National President. Luke has an extensive record of service to RLI, having served as Chair of both the Education and Budget and Finance committees, and most recently serving on the 2020 Board of Directors as Treasurer. Additionally, Luke has served as the President of the RLI Illinois Chapter. He has been a member of RLI since 2009 and earned the elite Accredited Land Consultant (ALC) Designation shortly after in 2012.

Luke brings a wealth of industry and community leadership experience to his new position with RLI. Among his many accomplishments, he has twice served as President of the Jacksonville Area Association of Realtors; is the current President Elect of the Jacksonville Kiwanis Club; is the 2021 Chair of the Illinois Farmland Values and Lease Trends Conference; and served a six-year term on the board of directors for the Morgan County Fair Board. Luke was the winner of RLI’s 2018 Rising Star Award, an annual honor conferred on an aspiring leader.

The election also adds two At-Large Directors to the RLI Board for a two-year term. In an effort to give members a stronger voice into the direction of the organization, three elected At-Large Director seats were added in 2017. RLI is proud to announce the election of Drew Ary, ALC, of Keller Williams Advantage in Oklahoma and Geoff Hurdle, ALC, of Hurdle Land and Realty in Tennessee, onto the 2021 RLI Board of Directors. Drew Ary served as Vice Chair of the 2020 Future Leaders Committee and has served on the ALC Accreditation Committee since 2018. Geoff Hurdle has served the past two years as President of the RLI Tennessee Chapter.

NAR’s ‘Right Tools, Right Now‘ initiative makes numerous valuable resources available to the association’s 1.4 million members at reduced or no cost.

Members TeleHealth

Members TeleHealth, part of NAR’s ‘Right Tools, Right Now’ initiative, provides around-the-clock access to non-emergency healthcare from more than 2,300 board-certified U.S. physicians. Common issues addressed through telemedicine include allergies, asthma, rashes, joint aches, flu and nausea, among others. Beginning April 2, NAR is funding two months of services for members who currently lack access to telemedicine and enroll in this program by April 15. Recognizing that the opportunity will likely draw significant interest from its members, NAR has also negotiated a discounted rate for those who wish to retain coverage following the two month, no-cost period.

Coronavirus SBA CARES Act

NAR’s Federal Advocacy team has been working closely with Congress and the Administration to ensure the interests of REALTORS® and their clients are protected in any federal action in response to COVID-19. Many REALTORS® are small businesses, or work with them as clients. In the most recent relief package passed into law, the “Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act” or CARES Act, there were significant provisions aimed at assisting small businesses during this difficult time. The CARES Act appropriates more than $360 billion total for new Small Business Administration (SBA) programs – the 7(a) Paycheck Protection Program loans and the Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL) advance grants program. Congress Clears Coronavirus Relief Bill

6/17/2020 The Small Business Administration and U.S. Treasury Department on Wednesday rolled out major updates to the Paycheck Protection Program, offering automatic forgiveness for certain independent contractors and creating a broader application form for forgiveness. Read more.

4/23/2020 The U.S. House passed legislation Thursday providing a fresh round of funding for coronavirus small-business relief programs championed by the National Association of REALTORS® and available to REALTORS® through the CARES Act. The Senate passed the bill on Tuesday.

President Trump is expected to sign the measure, which will clear the way for lending to resume as early as Friday under two Small Business Administration programs, the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) Program.

Under the agreement, the PPP will receive $310 billion in new cash, while the EIDL fund will receive an additional $60 billion. The bill sets aside $60 billion of the PPP funding for small and medium-sized community banks, which will provide extra help for self-employed individuals and small businesses that don’t have relationships with larger banks.

“The PPP and EIDL had tremendous demand. Although the rollout was rocky, this latest bill should provide enough funds for everyone who needs a loan to get it. REALTORS® still waiting should contact their lender again and keep trying,” says Shannon McGahn, senior vice president of advocacy for NAR. “We have a wealth of resources to help you through the process, including a new video just posted last night.”

The bill also includes $25 billion for coronavirus testing and $75 billion for hospitals.

Quick Guidance for REALTORS® on the PPP and EIDL From NAR

  • If you’ve already applied for an EIDL: The SBA is processing applications already in their system on a first-come, first-served basis. You do not need to reapply.
  • If you have not already applied for an EIDL: Check back at the SBA application page once the additional funding is signed into law.
  • If you’ve already applied for a PPP loan through an SBA lender but have not been approved yet: Check with your lender to see if they are maintaining a queue of applications during the lapse or if you will need to reapply when the renewed funding comes through.

If you have not applied yet for a PPP loan through an SBA lender: Have the application form filled out and your documentation ready to provide to your lender. (For businesses with employees, have payroll documentation; for independent contractors, have your 2019 Form 1040, Schedule C, and 1099-MISC.) If you have an existing relationship with an SBA lender, you should go to that lender first once the program reopens, but be prepared to try multiple lenders, which you can find on the SBA site.

Realtors® Land Institute Announces 2019 RLI Leadership Award Winners

April 1, 2020 (Chicago, Ill.) – Four Realtors® Land Institute members received awards during the 2020 Virtual National Land Conference (NLC20) through the esteemed RLI Leadership Awards Program. All award recipients are nominated and selected by their peers for their efforts.

Ray Brownfield, ALC, with Land Pro LLC in Illinois, received the 2019 Robert C. Meeks Distinguished Service Award. In honor of dedicated, long-time Accredited Land Consultant Robert C. Meeks, the Distinguished Service Award is presented to an ALC in recognition of their long-term commitment and service to fellow members, the land profession, and the community.

Paul Bottari, ALC, with Bottari & Associates Realty Inc. in Nevada, received the 2019 Land Realtor® of America Award. The Land Realtor® of America Award recognizes RLI members for their effort and work expended in the interest of their fellow members, their profession, and their community.

Matt Davis, ALC, with Cushman & Wakefield in California, received the 2019 Rising Star Award. The Rising Star Award recognizes a member approaching a mid-level in their career who is on their way to making significant contributions to the land profession and to RLI.

Kirk Goble, ALC, with The Bell 5 Land Company in Colorado, received the 2019 Excellence in Instruction Award. The Excellence in Instruction Award recognizes RLI’s Land University (LANDU) Instructors for their exceptional teaching skills, contributions to the professional development of students, and volunteerism for the LANDU Education Program.

RLI also awarded the RLI Oklahoma Chapter with the 2019 Chapter of the Year Award and Robert Campbell with the RLI Missouri Chapter as the 2019 Chapter Administrator of the Year.

The Realtors® Land Institute Applauds The New WOTUS Rule

January 23, 2020 (Chicago) – The REALTORS® Land Institute applauds the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for replacing the 2015 Clean Water Act, also known as Waters of The U.S. (WOTUS), with a new Clean Water/WOTUS rule that provides much-needed and long-awaited regulatory certainty for landowners nationwide.

The new rule brings clarity to which level of government – federal or state – oversees land that is usually dry but may take on water depending on weather. The new rule does not change who oversees permanent waterways, such as lakes, rivers, streams and other bodies that always or usually contain water. However, it does make clear that usually dry areas, like Prior Converted Crop (PCC) land, should not be considered federal waters and will remain excluded from their jurisdiction.

The 2020 National President of the REALTORS® Land Institute Kyle Hansen, ALC, responded to the news with the following comment, “The REALTORS® Land Institute and National Association of REALTORS® have long been strong supporters of the review and repeal of the WOTUS rule so that clarifications like this could be made to ensure that both private property rights and clean waterways are protected. This is a big win for landowners across the country, and a perfect reminder of the importance of using a qualified agent to help you navigate both the local and federal regulations that can come with conducting a land transaction.”

Newly Released Report Shows Slow But Steady Growth In The National Land Market

January 22, 2020 (Chicago) The Realtors® Land Institute (RLI) and National Association of Realtors® Research Group just released the results of their latest Land Markets Survey. The 2019 Land Markets Survey showed sustainable growth in both national land sales and land prices. Survey respondents reported a rise in sales for all types of land, led by residential and recreational land. The median price per acre of land transactions during October 2018 and September 2019 increased to $5,500 from $4,500 during the prior twelve-month period. The increase is mainly due to a higher price per acre of residential land as demand for single family homes, and the land it is built on, continues to increase.

Although an increase was seen for both land sales and prices, for the second year in a row growth was at a slightly slower pace than the previous year. Respondents indicated that the slowdown is likely a result of current US economic conditions, financing, and local zoning as well as depressed commodity prices. Additionally, the 2019 Land Markets Survey found properties were spending a longer time on the market before selling than in previous years, with land typically on the market 120 days, compared to the typical 90-100 days seen in past surveys.

As for the 2020 outlook, respondents expect a 2.2% sales volume increase in the next 12 months, with the strongest growth being predicted for residential, industrial, and irrigated agricultural lands. Despite the predicted increase in sales volume and a predicted increase in land prices for all land types, they expect the land price growth to be slower at a rate of 1.6% in the next 12 months.

Accredited Land Consultant Designation Approved for CCIM Fast Track

October 22, 2019 (Chicago, Ill) – The Realtors® Land Institute and CCIM Institute, both commercial affiliates of the National Association of Realtors®, are working together to elevate the prestige of their designees with the approval of the Accredited Land Consultant (ALC) Designation into the CCIM Fast Track criteria. With its approval, real estate professionals who hold RLI’s elite ALC Designation can now earn the esteemed CCIM designation at an accelerated pace as a Fast Track Institute Candidate member. Given their proven expertise and experience in commercial transactions, an ALC can now earn the CCIM designation without needing to meet the traditional elective credit and portfolio requirements.

Dean Saunders, ALC, was elected by membership as their 2020 RLI National Vice President. Dean joins the 2020 RLI National Board of Directors as a part of their Executive Committee alongside 2020 President Kyle Hansen, ALC, from Iowa with Hertz Real Estate Services; 2020 President-Elect Renee Harvey, ALC, of Texas with Century 21 Harvey Properties; and 2020 Immediate Past President Jeramy Stephens, ALC, of Arkansas with National Land Realty.

In this position, Dean will serve a four-year term on RLI’s Executive Committee making him the association’s 2022 RLI National President. He has an extensive record of service to RLI, serving as Chair of RLI’s Governmental Affairs Committee, as a member of the ALC Designation Committee, and on their Board of Directors. Additionally, he served as the President of the RLI Florida Chapter. Dean has been a member of RLI since 1998 and he earned the elite Accredited Land Consultant (ALC) Designation shortly after in 2001.

Dean’s experience and dedication in the industry also add to the industry expertise he will bring to the position. Among his many accomplishments, in 2019, he was awarded the 2018 APEX Top National Producer Award for being the highest-producing agent in the country for land sales based on qualifying production volume. He has also been recognized as the Florida Realtor® of the Year by the RLI Florida Chapter and earned the #1 Sales Professional annual recognition in the CBC affiliate network five times, most recently in 2018.

The election also adds one At-Large Director to the RLI Board for a two-year term. In an effort to give members a stronger voice into the direction of the organization, the addition of three elected At-Large Directors seats were implemented in 2017. RLI is proud to announce the election of George Clift, ALC, of Clift Land Brokers in Texas, onto the 2020 RLI Board of Directors. George has served as the 2014 RLI National President, on various RLI Committees, its Board of Directors, and, most recently, as the RLI National Treasurer on the Budget & Finance Committee.

In response, RLI’s CEO Aubrie Kobernus, MBA, RCE, released the following statement upon their election: “The RLI Board of Directors and I could not be more fortunate to have such dedicated and knowledgeable additions joining us in our mission to further position RLI as The Voice of Land in the industry. RLI at the REALTOR Legislative Meetings and Trade Expo

RLI Attends 2019 REALTOR® Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo

REALTORS® Land Institute leadership and members attended the REALTORS® Legislative Meetings and Trade Expo in Washington, DC, from May 13-18. Check out these key highlights from the event to see RLI’s presence and impact while at the event:

  • The morning of Tuesday, May 14, RLI hosted its RLI Leadership and Member Meeting where Russell Riggs, RLI’s Legislative Liaison to the National Association of REALTORS®, gave an update on the latest legislative issues affecting the land industry and Aubrie gave an update about the RLI 2017-2020 Strategic Plan.
  • RLI Leadership again attended the NAR Commercial Reception in the evening on Thursday, May 16 to make sure our organization’s presence was felt.
  • While in town, RLI 2018-19 National President Jeramy Stephens, ALC, and RLI CEO Aubrie Kobernus visited the Capitol to thank Senator Cotton (R-AR) for sponsoring SR 115 which congratulates RLI on its 75th Anniversary this year!
  • Finally, on Friday, May 17, RLI 2016 National President Bob Turner, ALC, was invited to the stage by US President Donald Trump to speak on Opportunity Zones. Turner is considered the REALTOR® expert on the topic. President Trump started off his speech discussing how his policies have helped strengthen private property rights in the land industry. He came back to discussing land-related issues various times throughout the speech to his audience of REALTORS®, referencing the positive impacts of his administration’s polices being implemented by the Environmental Protection Agency, the benefits landowners may see from the recent tariff policies, and more.

LANDU Education Week Attendees Awarded ALC Pins At NLC19

Once a year, the REALTORS® Land Institute (RLI) offers land professionals the opportunity to greatly enhance their expertise by taking all six courses needed to earn RLI’s elite Accredited Land Consultant (ALC) Designation in one place, at one time: LANDU Education Week. Every year, a dedicated group of agents attend that take full advantage of this opportunity, complete all the courses, and go on to proudly receive their ALC pin. Many of those who received their pin after attending LANDU Week were also named top-producing agents as award recipients as part of RLI’s esteemed APEX Awards Program.

The coveted ALC Designation pin is awarded each year in March at RLI’s National Land Conference. This year’s recipients received their pins from 2018-19 RLI National President Jeramy Stephens, ALC, on March 5th in Albuquerque, NM. Of those in attendance who were invited to the stage to accept their pin, ten of them had attended the 2018 LANDU Education Week that took place in Arlington, TX, the previous June. RLI is proud to recognize these professionals and all of the elite agents that dedicated themselves to the earning the designation in 2018.

Of those receiving their pin at conference was Eric C. Frickle, ALC, CCIM, with Eric Conrad Frickle Commercial Realty in California who was also awarded the RLI APEX 2018 Broker of the Year in Commercial Land Sales. When later asked about the value that the week provided, he stated “RLI’s LANDU Education Week was a great experience. It afforded me the opportunity to complete all of the courses I needed for designation in a classroom environment. This provided a great opportunity for building relationships with fellow classmates… and it was great to see them all again at NLC!”

Also receiving their pins in Albuquerque were Dan Murphy, ALC, and Michael Murphy, ALC, Broker/Owners of the M4 Ranch Group in Colorado. If their names sound familiar it’s likely because they tied to be named the RLI APEX 2017 Top National Producer, the program’s most coveted and prestigious award, at NLC17. When discussing his experience at the 2018 LANDU Education Week, he recalled “We attended LANDU Week in 2018 and this is by far the best way to complete a majority of the ALC classes and make connections for life. Great classes and great instructors but the friendships created were a perfect bonus!”

His brother Dan also raved about the week saying “LANDU is the best way to accomplish the goal of attaining the highly coveted ALC Designation. The best part is surrounding yourself with the true professionals in our industry. While the education and convenience of LANDU is outstanding on its own, the contacts and friendships greatly outweigh the learning.”

The star-studded line up of ALCs that were handed their pins in Albuquerque doesn’t end there. The RLI 2018 APEX Wrangler Award winner also spoke about what an honor it was to receive his pin after having completed the courses at the 2018 LANDU Education Week. Geoff Hurdle, ALC, of Hurdle Land & Realty in Tennessee with the APEX 2018 Wrangler Award for largest number of transactions closed in 2018; Geoff had over 181 closed transaction sides in 2018! Reflecting on the experience he mentioned “I knew that LANDU Week was the only way I was going to get in the education requirements for my ALC without it taking me years to complete. To have done that all at once sounds like a time-suck but, in actuality, it was a time-saver! LANDU Week also saved me money from a lot of travel. I am so, so thankful for LANDU and how it all worked out! I highly recommend LANDU Education Week. Besides, you meet a bunch of people after the same thing that become great friends!”

On connecting with one other 2018 LANDU Education Week attendee that went on to get his pin at the 2019 National Land Conference, Walter Hatchett, ALC, of Kohler & Associates in Georgia said “Having the opportunity to attend the 2018 LANDU Week in Dallas and listen to and learn from top land real estate professionals was a great experience for me. The networking and knowledge gained was priceless, as well as making friendships that will last a lifetime. It was truly worth the investment, to me, to have all the classes needed in one location and timeframe to assist in obtaining my ALC Designation.” Walter was also recognized as part of the RLI APEX Awards Program as a RLI 2018 APEX Top Twenty Producer.
